Hong Lim Green was Singapore's first public garden created and maintained by Cheang Hong Lim, who was a businessman and philanthropist. It was a popular venue for election rallies, political speeches and public performances in the 50's and 60's.

In 1885, Cheang Hong Lim also erected Singapore Chinese Recreation Club House at his own expense. The club stood in the centre of Hong Lim and had some outstanding cricket and hockey national players. The club house and field had been demolished now.

Cheang Hong Lim died on February 11, 1893.

Today the garden is maintained by the government.
