Southern Hotel was built in 1927. It was the tallest building in early years and was the first building with a lift.
Before World War Two, there were offices on the gound floor. Hotel rooms were located at the upper floors. The fourth floor housed popular Chinese restaurants and tea house. Occasionally, operas were staged on this floor to add attraction to the hotel.
